Getting Started

Safety can seem like a daunting task, especially if you’re starting from scratch. You may be asking yourself, “where do I begin?” This Getting Started Guide shows you step by step instructions on implementing the SBCA Operation Safety Program in your component manufacturing facility.

Operation Safety is a customizable, industry-specific safety program to assist component manufacturers in creating or improving their existing safety programs. This program is a great starting point for implementing a high quality safety program in your component manufacturing plant.

Benefits of a Safety & Health Program

The main benefit of a well-rounded safety program is a reduction in the overall costs associated with safety management in your facility. The financial savings range in expenses from worker’s compensation claims and higher insurance premiums to lost production time and poor customer relations.

A good safety program will help you to reduce YOUR costs by:

  • Minimizing health and safety risks
  • Preventing unsafe acts
  • Controlling exposure to health and safety hazards
  • Communicating safety and health issues to your employees


The information in this road map to implementation will show you steps to take. The amount of time that it takes you to complete this process will depend on the circumstances in your individual facility. If you’re starting from scratch, it could take as long as a year; if you’ve got a good plan in place that needs a little tweaking, it could take as little as three months. We've outline a 3-month plan below, but you should implement the program in way that makes the most sense for your plant.

1. Designate a Safety Coordinator
Your Safety Coordinator(s) will oversee all elements of the Operation Safety implementation process through training, scheduling and delegation.

2. Review the Operation Safety Guidelines
The Safety Coordinator should familiarize him/herself with all of the basic parts of the Operation Safety Program including the information Safety Guidelines document, online training modules and certification software. These will become the resources needed to successfully manage the Operation Safety Program. These documents can be downloaded as Microsoft Word documents or PDFs from safety.sbcindustry.com/opsafe.php.

3. Review the Online Training Modules
The Safety Coordinator should watch each of the Management Guidelines and Employee Training Modules. These can be accessed directly through this website by logging in and choosing Course Launcher from the menu on the left.

4. Individual Certification
Once the educational modules have been viewed, the Safety Coordinator is ready to take the Operation Safety Proctored Exam. After passing with a score of 85% or better, the Safety Coordinator has achieved individual certification!

5. Baseline Inspections
The next step is to perform a baseline inspection of the entire facility. Using the Weekly and Quarterly Checklists provided, the Safety Coordinator needs to review each area of the manufacturing plant. This evaluation will give the Safety Coordinator a sense for the hazards present and also for any problem areas that might be pre-existing.

6. Employee Training
The Safety Coordinator can use the Employee Training modules in addition to the Employee Safety Handbook to teach employees about the safety hazards and rules in a component manufacturing plant.

7. Safety Committee Meetings
The Safety Coordinator is also responsible for scheduling meetings to discuss safety concerns and topics each month.

8. Enter Your Data
At the end of the first quarter, the Safety Coordinator should re-evaluate the plant using the Weekly Checklist, Quarterly Checklists and Safety Audit provided. This information will be entered into the Operation Safety Software online. The inspection should cover every area of the facility and reflect the changes that have been made since the baseline evaluation.

9. Third Party Inspection
The final step in plant certification is to secure a 3rd Party Inspection Agency and schedule a facility inspection. To become certified, you must score at least an average of 3.5 on the Operation Safety Third Party Audit.

10. Plant Certification & Maintenance
Enjoy Certification! Maintaining certification is an ongoing process. In order to remain certified, the Safety Coordinator will continue to add the information from the Weekly/Quarterly Checklists, Safety Audit, Safety Meetings and Proactive Achievements (on a quarterly basis) to the database.

How long will it take to implement/get Certified?

Month 1

  1. Receive the program.
  2. Designate a Safety Coordinator.
  3. Review the Safety Guidelines documents.
  4. Watch all Management Guidelines and Employee Training Modules.

Month 2

  1. Schedule and take the Operation Safety Proctored Exam.
  2. Perform a baseline inspection of your facility.
  3. Begin Employee Training, Schedule Monthly Safety Meetings, Have employees watch training modules.

Month 3

  1. Fill out Quarterly Checklists and enter data into Operation Safety database.
  2. Locate a 3rd Party Inspection Agency and schedule your first 3rd Party Inspection.
  3. Maintain certification by continuing to enter your data into the online Operation Safety software and passing 3rd Party Inspections.
